SALT LAKE CITY - The defense of the University of Utah softball team's Mountain West Conference title is set to start on Feb. 9 with its season opener at the KAJIKAWA Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
The KAJIKAWA Classic marks the first of six non-conference tournaments Utah will participate in before its home and conference opener on April 13 against Brigham Young.
The opening home date against the Cougars marks the first game of a seven-game homestand. During that span, the Utes will also host New Mexico (April 19), Colorado State (April 20-21) and Utah State (April 25).
All five league opponents will come to town. In addition to the Cougars, Lobos and Rams, the Utes also host San Diego State and UNLV. The defending regular season champion, SDSU invades Ute Field on May 10 while the regular season wraps up against the Rebels on May 11-12.
The league schedule will have a new look in 2007. MWC games will now take place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of each week. Thursday will always be a doubleheader against the first team while Friday and Saturday will be single games against a second team.
Other non-conference games of note are neutral site games against Washington (March 20 at Fullerton, Calif.) and Ohio State (March 23 at Fullerton, Calif.). The Utes will also play at Cal State Fullerton on March 21. While the home opener isn't until April, Utah will play a non-conference tilt locally at UVSC on March 13.
The NCAA Regionals is set to begin on May 16 while the NCAA Super Regionals start on May 23 and the Women's College World Series on May 30.
