SALT LAKE CITY -- University of Utah shortstop Ryan Khoury was named the District VIII Player of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Sunday.
Khoury joined eight other players from around the nation as district honorees. Khoury, the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year, was selected in the 12th round of last week's Major League Baseball Draft by the Boston Red Sox.
Khoury batted .438 this past season, leading Utah to its first .500-or-better finish since 2002. His batting average currently ranks as the fifth best in all of NCAA Division I. Khoury hit 13 home runs in 2006, while driving in 56 runs. His slugging percentage was an outstanding .728 and he stole 16 bases.
Other winners in the nine districts across the country were: Nim Negrych (2B, Pittsburgh, District I); Nick Massari (SS, Monmouth, District II); Ryan Strieby (1B, Kentucky, District III); Kellen Kulbacki (OF, James Madison, District IV); Ronnie Bourquin (3B, Ohio State, District V); Luke Gorsett (OF, Nebraska, District VI); Brad Lincoln (P/DH, Houston, District VII); and Wes Roemer (P, Cal State Fullerton, District IX).
