FORT WORTH, Texas - The University of Utah baseball team salvaged its trip to Texas Christian University Sunday afternoon. The Utes avoided being swept by the Horned Frogs, picking up a 6-3 win in Mountain West Conference play at Lupton Stadium.
Utah (23-22, 6-10 MWC) got a solid pitching performance from Lucas Trinnaman and Brad DeVore in the victory. Trinnaman (2-3) worked seven innings and scattered nine hits and three runs to take the victory. DeVore pitched the final two innings and allowed just one baserunner to pick up his sixth save.
The contest was tied 2-2 after three innings. Utah shortstop Ryan Khoury scored in the first inning after leading off the game with a single. Ute catcher Adam Frank scored in the third on an RBI single off the bat of first baseman Jay Brossman. TCU (28-21, 14-5) tallied single runs in the first and second. The Horned Frogs' Bryan Kervin and Matt Vern each led off with doubles and later came around to score.
The Utes hung two runs on the scoreboard in the fourth, taking a lead they would never relinquish. Third baseman Bret Baldwin led off with a double to right field. Baldwin later scored on a single from right fielder Joe Mozeleski to make it 3-2. Mozeleski plated another run later in the inning, scoring on a sacrifice bunt by second baseman Tyler Kmetko.
TCU pulled within one run in the bottom of the fourth. The Frogs manufactured a single run on one hit, a hit batsman and a sacrifice. But that's the last run TCU would manage against Trinnaman and DeVore.
Utah picked up some insurance in the fifth and eighth innings. Designated hitter Eric King led off the fifth with a single and later scored on a Mozeleski groundout. In the eighth, Mozeleski led off with a walk in the eighth, before leaving for pinch-runner Mike Tummolo. Left fielder Corey Shimada then doubled to center, scoring Tummolo and giving Utah its three-run advantage.
Brossman and Mozeleski paced Utah at the plate, driving in a pair of runs apiece. Baldwin went 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Utes.
TCU starter Sam Demel (5-5) suffered the loss. He tossed six innings, allowing five runs on eight hits. Austin Adams led the Horned Frogs at the plate, going 3-for-4.
Utah is back in action again Tuesday afternoon, hosting Utah Valley State at Ute Field. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
