SALT LAKE CITY - Devina Quintero's eight RBI were key as the University of Utah softball team (34-15) bagged a pair of victories over UVSC, racing its winning streak out to six straight games. The Utes tallied a 10-0 win in six innings and rallied for a 6-4 win in the nightcap.
Quintero got the day off to a bad start, going 0-for-2 in her first at bats. But, she responded with five straight hits, four of which tallied RBI. The junior third baseman had a two-RBI double and a grand-slam home run in game one, and followed that with a pair of RBI singles in the second game. She finished the day going 5-for-7 (.714) and had eight of the team's 16 RBI, in addition to scoring a pair of runs.
Jackie Wong also had a solid effort on the day. She went 4-for-8 at the plate and scored four runs. Wong extended her hitting streak out to 16 straight games today.
Meghan Dyer got the start in game one and improves to 13-6 on the year. She held the Wolverines to one hit in fanning nine and walking one.
A scoreless tie at the onset, the Utes burst for four runs in the third inning. Most of the scores came from the bat of Jessica Shiery who hit her team-leading 10th homer of the year. It was a three-run shot.
The Utes put an end to game one in the sixth inning. With a 6-0 lead, Quintero's grand-slam effort finished the game, giving Utah the 10-0 lead after five complete innings.
Lindsie Nielsen got the start in the second game, but left the game trailing 4-3. Sheri Shrock came on in relief and held UVSC at bay, allowing Utah to rally for the 6-4 win. Shrock improves to 2-1 in garnering the game-two victory.
Quintero was the hero in game two, plating the game-winning RBI. With the game knotted at 5-5 in the fifth, Quintero laid down a suicide squeeze. She bunt the ball between the third baseman and the pitcher, allowing Meghan Crouse to score from third. No one was covering first as Quintero reached on a bunt for a single.
The Utes surrendered a pair of runs in the first inning of the nightcap but Utah held a brief 3-2 lead after the first inning. Quintero's RBI single and Sharee Fonoti's two-run home run gave Utah the one-run lead after one complete frame.
UVSC put two more runs on the board in the second inning and nursed the 4-3 lead until the fifth. Three RBI singles in that inning allowed the Utes to rally for the win. Shiery's RBI single tied the game, Quintero's gave Utah the lead and Staci Hemingway's gave it the insurance run, just in case.
Today's doubleheader was the last home games of the year for Utah. The Utes finish the 2006 season 15-2 at Ute Field. Up next are the final two regular season doubleheaders at UNLV (Friday, May 5) and San Diego State (Sunday, May 7). The Mountain West Conference Tournament begins on Thursday, May 11, in Las Vegas.
