AUSTIN, Texas - The NCAA Regionals here in Austin, Texas, got off to a rocky start for the University of Utah softball team (38-20 overall) this afternoon. The Indiana Hoosiers (30-23-1) dealt the Utes a 3-0 loss in the first game of the double-elimination tournament.
The Utes return to the diamond for the NCAA tournament tomorrow afternoon. They will play the loser of the Texas-UTSA game at 3:30 p.m. (CDT).
IU hurler Mariangee Bogado had a no-hitter through 5.1 innings. But, Meghan Crouse broke that up in the top of the sixth with a single to right field. She was only one of two base runners for Utah on the day. Diana Phillips was the only other Ute to reach base when she was hit by a pitch in the first.
Karina Cannon got the nod in the circle and came up short, falling 20-8 on the year. She scattered nine hits, allowed three runs and fanned four Hoosier batters. Cannon tossed for 5.1 innings before Meghan Dyer came on in relief.
IU finished the day with nine hits.
The Hoosiers built their 3-0 lead in scoring in each the second, third and fourth innings.
In the second, a Sarah Padove double to the gap in left field scored Kim Richards all the way from first. Richards got on board with a single to second. Indiana hung another run on the board in the third when Richards singled through the left side of the infield. It plated Jennilee Huddleston all the way from second.
Another RBI single in the fourth made it 3-0. Julia Hamilton sent the ball to left field with two on. The single was deep enough to score pinch runner Heather Hohs from second base.
Both teams threatened in their first at bats. Utah and Indiana had a runner on third with two out in the first, but got out of the inning unscathed.
