Utes, Cougars Meet at Franklin Covey Field
The University of Utah baseball team wraps up its season-long, season-ending eight-game homestand this week. The Utes play host to arch-rival Brigham Young University Thursday-Saturday at Franklin Covey Field.
The Utes currently sit tied with UNLV for fifth place in the seven-team Mountain West Conference. The Utes are just one game behind fourth-place New Mexico and two games back of third-place BYU.
The Utes have won four straight, including Tuesday night's 5-2 win over Southern Utah.
The Cougars have won their last three MWC series.
Utah Balls & Strikes
? Utah is currently one game out of fourth place in the MWC. The Utes sit at 9-10 and tied for fifth place. TCU, New Mexico, San Diego State and BYU are above them. Utah is tied with UNLV for fifth, with Air Force in seventh.
? Utah was 1-5 against BYU last season, with the only win coming at Franklin Covey. The Utes already have a 5-4 win over the Cougars in non-conference action this season.
? Utah ranks 15th -- out of 285 teams -- in the nation in HR per game (1.18).
? The Utes are also No. 16 in NCAA Division I in slugging percentage (.496).
Ryan's Record
With a leadoff single in the top of the third inning against Southern Utah Tuesday night, senior shortstop Ryan Khoury became the Utes' career hits leader.
Khoury broke the school career hits record of 280. Nate Wese, who played for Utah from 1999-2002, was the previous record-holder.
Khoury doubled off the right-center field wall later in Tuesday's game to push his career total to 282 hits.
Winning Ways
With a 27-23 record and at least five games remaining, Utah has a solid chance at a winning overall record and could finish above .500 in the MWC.
Utah has not finished better than .500 overall or in the league for four years. The Utes were 33-26 and 16-14 in the league back in 2002.
The Utes' 2002 season was their one and only winning season since 1998.
