SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah baseball team got a strong performance from starting pitcher Lucas Trinnaman Saturday night against Air Force. Trinnaman allowed just two hits and two unearned runs as the Utes took a 13-2 win over the Falcons at Franklin Covey Field.
Air Force (10-32, 1-17 MWC) grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Falcons took advantage of two Utah errors in the inning and scored a pair of unearned runs. Trinnaman had no trouble with Air Force the rest of the evening, however. He held the Falcons scoreless, while he waited for the Utah offense to come to life.
The Utes' bats finally awoke in the bottom of the fourth inning, when they put seven runs on the board and took a 7-2 advantage. Utah first baseman Jay Brossman delivered a three-run, bases-clearing double in the inning. Center fielder John Welsh also had a big blow, pounding a two-run home run over the left-field wall.
Utah (25-23, 8-10) added three more runs in the fifth. Second baseman Bret Baldwin ripped a two-run triple off the wall in left-center, knocking Air Force starter Casey Allen out of the game. Baldwin later scored on a double-steal attempt, putting Utah on top 10-2.
The contest came to an end via the 10-run rule in the seventh inning. Utah scored three runs in the frame, including two on Erich Kemp's bases-loaded, two-run single which ended the contest.
Trinnaman (3-3) struck out nine and walked just two to pick up the victory for Utah. The Utes were paced at the plate by Baldwin, who was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Brossman also drove in three runs for Utah.
The Utes scored all 13 of their runs with two outs in Saturday's contest. Allen allowed 10 of those runs and took the loss for Air Force. Karl Bolt and Jason Griggs had the lone Falcon hits on the day.
The three-game Mountain West Conference series wraps up Sunday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
