FULLERTON, Calif. - The University of Utah softball team (13-9 overall) saw its losing streak extend to three games as the University of Alabama dealt the Utes a 3-1 loss in the Judi Garman Classic here this afternoon.
Alabama's RBI single in the fourth and RBI double in the fifth broke a 1-1 tie and proved to be the deciding factor in the loss.
A Devina Quintero sacrifice bunt in the first inning scored Jackie Wong and gave the Utes a brief 1-0 lead over the Cimson Tide.
But, Alabama would score three unanswered runs to rally for the win. An RBI single to short by Staci Ramsey scored Jordan Praytor from third and knotted the game at 1-1.
The Crimson Tide hung two more on the board and got it started with Dani Woods' RBI single to right filed in the fourth inning. It scored pinch runner Mallory Benak from second. Insurance came in the fifth inning when Praytor belted an RBI double to left-center field, easily scoring Kelley Montalvo from third.
Karina Cannon (5-4) took the loss, in allowing six hits and three earned runs. She fanned eight Crimson Tide batters and only walked three.
The Utes tapped Alabama's Chrissy Owens for four hits. Wong and Quintero each had hits in addition to Diana Phillips and Meghan Crouse. But, Owens struck out five Ute batters and didn't allow a walk in improving to 8-2 on the year.
