DAVIS, Calif. -- The University of Utah baseball team dropped a 9-1 decision to Cal Davis Saturday afternoon at the Dobbins Baseball Complex. The loss dropped Utah to 3-5 on the season and evened the series at one game apiece.

UC Davis got started with a big, five-run second inning. The Aggies took advantage of an error by Ute third baseman Erich Kemp, scoring three unearned runs in the inning.

Utah got on the scoreboard when Ryan Khoury ripped a solo home run to left field, leading off the top of the third. But UC Davis got that run right back in the bottom of the inning. The Aggies' Aaron Hanke led off with a double and moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt by Utah starting pitcher Eric King. Hanke later scored on a base hit by Jimmy Goetz, giving UC Davis a 6-1 lead.

The Aggies added a single run in the seventh and two more in the eighth to pull away for the eight-run victory.

King (1-1) was the tough-luck loser for Utah. Only two of the six runs he allowed in 2 1/3 innings were earned. Khoury was 2-for-4 with the home run in the leadoff spot for the Utes. Bret Baldwin, batting second, was 3-for-5. But the Utes' three, four and five hitters were a combined 0-for-10. Utah left 10 runners on base in the contest.

Goetz was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, leading the UC Davis offense. Vince DeCoito tossed five innings and allowed just one run to take the win for the Aggies. Brad McAtee worked the final four innings, allowing just one hit, to pick up the save.

Utah and UC Davis are slated to wrap up their three-game series Sunday afternoon.
