SALT LAKE CITY - The 2005 University of Utah baseball campaign came to an end as the Utes fell to the No. 3-seeded San Diego State Aztecs, 10-3, here in the Mountain West Conference Tournament this afternoon.
Fifth-seeded Utah turned in a 19-36 mark for the year while San Diego State improves to 26-34 on the season. The Aztecs will play the loser of the Brigham Young/UNLV game at 7 p.m., tonight.
Ben Coon got the nod for the Aztecs but only tossed three innings of work. Cody Campbell threw a gem in relief and picked up the win in upping to 2-0 for the year. Starter Matt Crockett (4-10) picks up the loss.
SDSU's Lance Zawadski did the most damage. He was 3-for-4 at the plate and had three RBI and a run scored. A pair of Utes had two hits each. John Welsh was 2-for-3 with an RBI while Trevor Eastman was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Utes couldn't keep pace with San Diego State's bats as the Aztecs scored in each of the first three innings in taking a 5-3 lead into the fourth. SDSU hung another five runs on the board as it scored in each of its last three at-bats and claimed the seven-run victory.
