PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The University of Utah softball team battled the weather and No. 3-ranked Stanford this afternoon, dropping a 6-0 decision here in rain-drenched Palo Alto, Calif., this afternoon.

The Utes, who fall to 9-14 for the year, tallied only one hit in their second game on the afternoon. Utah was 1-1 today as it topped Princeton, 3-2, in the first game of the Stanford Round Robin Tournament this afternoon. The Cardinal improves to 19-3 after dropping a 2-0 game to Princeton earlier today.

Lindsie Nielsen got the start and takes the loss. She struck out two batters, allowed eight hits and falls to 3-7 for the year. Brianna Gourdin came on in the fifth and pitched the final two innings. Becky McCullough went six innings for Stanford and is 4-0 for the season. She allowed one hit in fanning eight Ute batters.

Jackie Wong was 1-for-3 during the game, the only Ute to tally a hit against Stanford.

Stanford got a run in each of the first two innings. In the first inning Cataline Morris' leadoff triple to the gap in right field led to a 1-0 ballgame for the home team when she later tagged up on Lauren Lappin's lazy fly ball to left. Meghan Sickler's solo home run in the second made it 2-0 for the Cardinal.

A four-run fifth gave the Cardinal extra insurance, making it 6-0 for Stanford. Erin Howe belted a two-run home run well over the 220-foot sign in center field and Morris hit an RBI triple down the left field line to score Anna Beardman. Stanford plated the sixth run of the game on a wild pitch.
