ST. GEORGE, Utah --- Pitcher Brianna Gourdin did it in the circle and at the plate as she helped the University of Utah softball team up its record to 2-0 with a 3-1 win over Southern Utah. It was the second game for the Utes this afternoon here in St. George after topping Utah Valley State, 9-0, in the day's first game.
Gourdin fanned 10 Southern Utah (0-2) players and walked three. She only allowed three hits - one in the first and two in the seventh. At the plate, Gourdin was 1-for-2 with an RBI and the game-winning score.
Phillips came in late in the game and was 1-for-1 with the game-winning RBI and a run scored as well. Lynsey Wall and Devina Quintero were each 1-for-3 at the plate.
SUU's Kristy Miller took the loss in chalking up two strikeouts and walking five. Offensively, Jentry Johnson led the Thunderbirds with a 2-for-3 effort and a run scored.
Gourdin held her rivals scoreless for the first six innings and helped her cause with an RBI triple and a run scored in the sixth frame. Gourdin's triple allowed Texie Criddle to easily score from first while Gourdin posted the insurance run when she trotted across the plate on a double by freshman Diana Phillips. Phillips later scored on a two-base throwing error.
The Thunderbirds put together a rally in their last at bat, tagging Gourdin for two of their three hits in the seventh inning. SUU scored its only run after loading the bases with one out. And with two in scoring position and two out, Gourdin retired Corie Jensen on strikes to end the game.
Utah had a chance midway through to strike first. In the fourth inning, Utah loaded the bases with one out. However, the Thunderbirds got out of a jam, forcing the Utes into two groundouts and coming out unscathed.
The third and final game of the BYU/UVSC Tournament is slated for tomorrow at 2 p.m. The Utes will play Utah Valley State at the Canyons Complex in St. George. The game was originally scheduled for noon.
