SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Weather cooperated just long enough for the University of Utah softball team to get in a rain-delayed contest with Notre Dame here in San Diego, Calif., this afternoon. The Irish held on for a 3-2 win in Utah's second game of the Campbell/Cartier Tournament on the campus of San Diego State University.
Utah (5-4) staged a late rally with Ivette Hernandez' two-run home run in the sixth but that was all it had. Notre Dame's (4-2) two-run first inning and one-run fourth were all it needed to cap its fourth win for the year.
Brianna Gourdin took the loss in falling to 2-2 for the year. She fanned two batters and scattered eight hits in allowing three runs, two of them earned. Hernandez was 1-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored. Bryanne Durrence was 1-for-2 and Kate Nygaard was 1-for-3 with a double.
Steffany Stenglein gets the win in tossing five and one-third innings. She made 10 Ute batters whiff and walked only three. Utah mustered three hits on the afternoon, two off of Stenglein.
Down 3-0 in the sixth, the Utes staged a rally on Hernandez' towering two-run home run to right center to cut UND's lead down to one, 3-2. Pinch runner Meghan Crouse also scored on the play.
The Utes had three other chances to post runs on the scoreboard. In each the first, third and fifth innings, Utah had runners in scoring position but failed to plate any runners. Utah left six runners on base.
The Irish got on the board in their first at bat on a two-RBI double to right center by Megan Ciolli. Stephanie Brown and Kellie Middleton scored but only one run was earned. UND hung the game-winning RBI run on the board in the fourth on Middleton's RBI single up the middle.
