Big First Half Lifts Utah Women Over Baden Sports

SALT LAKE CITY - The No. 21/22 University of Utah women's basketball team got its final tune-up for the season Tuesday night at the Huntsman Center. The Utes used a big first half to cruise by Baden Sports 92-71 in the exhibition contest.
Utah converted nearly 53 percent of its field goal attempts in the first 20 minutes. That hot shooting left the Utes with a 51-21 advantage at the intermission. Once again, the Utah veterans looked to be in midseason form. Senior forward Kim Smith (Mission, B.C.) had 10 points at the bread. Senior point guard Shona Thorburn (Hamilton, Ontario) had already dished out eight assists by halftime.
The Utes held a double-digit lead, 13-3, just four minutes into the contest. Baden Sports, which featured four former Utes on the roster, never got closer than nine after that. A 13-3 run midway through the first half was sparked by back-to-back three-pointers from junior Heidi Carlsen (St. George, Utah). That spurt pushed the Ute advantage to 20 points, 32-12.
Utah led by as many as 33 points late in the first half, before taking a 30-point advantage into the locker room.
Baden Sports slowly chipped away at the Ute lead in the second half. The visitors took advantage when many of the younger Utah athletes saw a great deal of playing time in the second period. Baden Sports cut its deficit to 18 late in the contest, but it was too little too late.
Carlsen and Smith each scored 16 points to lead the way for the Utes. Carlsen's points came in a 6-for-6 shooting performance, including four three-pointers. Three other Utes tallied 10 points. Freshmen Joh-Teena Filipe (Salt Lake City) and Morgan Warburton (Price, Utah) scored 10, along with senior Julie Larsen (Logan, Utah). Filipe pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds to tally a double-double.
Stacy Clinesmith led Baden Sports with 15 points, while former Ute Lindsay Herbert tallied 13.
Utah opens the regular season Nov. 19, hosting Jacksonville (Ala.) State in a 3 p.m. contest at the Huntsman Center.
