SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's basketball team opened exhibition play with an 86-57 victory over Montana-Western Thursday night at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
The Utes' veterans looked to be in mid-season form, despite the calendar showing early November. Forward Kim Smith (Sr. Mission, B.C.) hit her first four shots, all three-pointers, finishing with 24 points and nine rebounds. Point guard Shona Thorburn (Sr., Hamilton, Ontario) scored 17 points and dished out eight assists.
Montana-Western stayed with the Utes through the first five minutes, trailing 12-10. Five minutes later, Utah had built its advantage to double digits on a Thorburn three-pointer. The Lady Bulldogs were within eight points, 27-19, with 7:26 remaining in the opening half. But a Thorburn jumper and a three-pointer from Shauna Brouillard (Jr., Sudbury, Ontario) gave Utah a 13-point advantage less than one minute later. Montana-Western would not get any closer.
A Julie Larsen (Sr., Logan, Utah) jumper with three minutes left in the half capped a 15-2 run and gave the Utes a 21-point advantage, 42-21. Utah led 47-25 at halftime.
The Utes continued to methodically pull away in the second half. Utah saw its advantage balloon to as many as 33 points late in the contest before cruising to the 29-point victory.
Smith finished 9-of-12 from the floor, including 5-of-8 from three-point range for her 24-point night. Thorburn was 6-of-8 from the floor and hit her only trey. Morgan Warburton (Fr., Price, Utah) was the only other Ute in double figures, tallying 10 points in her first collegiate game. Heidi Carlsen (Jr., St. George, Utah) tallied nine points, including two three-pointers. All 14 Utah players saw action with 10 of them putting notches in the scoring column.
The Utes out-scored Montana-Western 13-0 off the fast break and 30-11 in points off turnovers. Utah also held a 23-4 advantage in second-chance points.
