SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah swimming and diving teams split against UNLV on Saturday at Ute Natatorium. The women beat the Rebels 148-95, while the men lost 111-130. The women improve to 3-1 on the season, 2-0 in the MWC, and the men fall to 2-1 overall, 0-1 MWC.
The women won 11 of 13 events, with Alison McInturff, Rachael Curci and Kelsey Patterson winning two individual events apiece. McInturff won the 100 free, finishing in 52.87 seconds. In the 200 free, McInturff posted a time of 1 minute, 56.02 seconds, beating out fellow Utes Curci (1:56.76) and Shannon McQueen (1:56.94), who finished second and third respectively.
Curci's time of 10 minutes, 31.15 seconds beat out UNLV's Lani Seaman by 16.76 seconds in the 1000 free. Curci then went on to win the 500 free with a time of 5 minutes, 05.91 seconds, to beat out Adrienne Coburn, who finished in 5 minutes, 12.57 seconds.
Kelsey Patterson swept both diving events for the third meet in a row. Patterson scored 283.80 points in the 1-meter event and 287.30 points in the 3-meter board. Freshman Anna Braszkewiecz placed second in both events, tallying 253.30 points in the 1-meter board and 255.20 in the 3-meter event.
Amber Walter won the 50 free for the second meet in a row, finishing in 23.84 seconds, and Jennifer Fredsall won the 200 fly with a time of 2 minutes, 08.57 seconds. Junior Marissa Martin took top honors in the 200 back (2:04.69) and McQueen finished third (2:07.64).
The Utes won both relay events, with McQueen, Walter, Fredsall and Amy Barefield winning the 400 medley relay in 3 minutes, 52.37 seconds. McInturff, Barefield, Fredsall and Walter took top honors in the 400 free relay with a time of 3 minutes, 32.29 seconds.
Jonathan Larsen and Sterling Richards led the men's team with two individual event victories each. Larsen won the 50 free in 20.82 seconds and the 100 free with a time of 45.47 seconds. Richards won both diving events for the third time this year. Richards tallied 356.90 points in the 1-meter and 316.60 points in the 3-meter event.
The men swept the diving events, claiming the top four places in both events. In the 1-meter, Richards was followed by Andrew Jones (290.80 points), Jacob Jewett (254.30 points) and Damien Brown (253.70 points) respectively. In the 3-meter, Jones finished second (290.40 points), Brown placed third (255.10 points) and Jewett took fourth with 232.30 points.
Jeremy Clark claimed top honors in the 200 free with a time of 1 minute, 42.91 seconds and George Evans placed second (1:44.82). In the 200 IM, Andrew Cole finished second (1:58.00) and Nick Philpot placed third (1:58.54), while Andrew Brown claimed second in the 200 fly with a time of 1 minute, 5.11 seconds for the Utes.
The men's meet came down to the last event, the 400 free relay. Utah entered the event trailing the Rebels 107-117, needing to place first and third in the relay to claim victory. Utah's David Johnson, Cole, Clark and Larsen finished second for Utah after Larsen's final push at the end wasn't enough, as the Utes lost by .22 tenths of a second with a time of 3 minutes, 06.43 seconds to UNLV's time of 3 minutes, 06.21 seconds.
"I'm proud of both our squads," said Head Coach Michael Litzinger. "We have some holes in our men's lineup, but they never stopped competing. Our divers performed great for us today, and now our focus has to shift to the Notre Dame Invitational."
Up next, the Utes travel to South Bend, Ind., to compete in the Notre Dame Invitational Dec. 1-3.
