SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The University of Utah men's and women's swimming and diving teams finished the first day of competition at the Notre Dame Invitational in second place. The women tallied 526 points, while the men scored 474 points. Both Notre Dame teams lead the field after day one.
The women started the meet strong, winning the 200 free relay by setting a new Utah school record and an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1 minute, 33.49 seconds. Amber Walter, Amy Barefield, Jennifer Fredsall and Alison McInturff competed in the event for the Utes.
Walter posted the Utes' first individual event victory by winning the 50 free in 23.18 seconds. Walter's time was also an NCAA provisional qualifying time. Fredsall finished third in the event with a time of 23.87 seconds, while Barefield placed fifth with a time of 23.94 seconds.
The women's 400 medley relay team of Shannon McQueen, Walter, Fredsall and McInturff picked up the women's third victory of the meet with a time of 3 minutes, 49.02 seconds.
Junior Kelsey Patterson won the 3-meter diving event with a score of 321.80, beating out Notre Dame's Tara Hyer by 8.35 points. Utah's Anna Braszkiewicz finished fourth with 289.05 points.
Seniors Jonathan Larsen and Sterling Richards each won one event apiece for the men's team. Larsen posted a time of 20.60 seconds in the 50 free to take top honors over North Dakota's Rodrigo Frreira (20.85). David Maasberg placed sixth (21.28) and David Johnson tied for seventh with Jason Stokes of Truman State with a time of 21.64 seconds.
Richards set a new Utah school record in the 1-meter diving event by tallying 376.90 points, 48.15 points more than second place. Juniors Andrew Jones (313.20) and Damien Brown (309.60) finished third and fourth respectively.
The men's 200 free relay team of Maasberg, Larsen, Matthew Bailey and Johnson finished second in the event with a time of 1 minute, 23.05 seconds. The 400 medley relay team placed third with a time of 3 minutes, 25.53 seconds with Andrew Cole, Michel DeCarolis, Andrew Brown and Larsen competing for Utah.
The Notre Dame Invitational continues tomorrow and Saturday with preliminary heats taking place each morning and the finals starting at 6:30 p.m.
