SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah softball team will dust off its bats and oil up the gloves for a nine-game, three-weekend schedule this fall.
All games will be held at Ute Field and are played on Fridays and Saturdays. Dates are Sept. 17-18, Sept. 24-25 and Oct. 1-2.
The Utes are coming off of a 23-33 season that saw them peak at the end of the year, earning a berth to the NCAA Regionals in Palo Alto, Calif. Utah went 6-6 in its last 12 regular season games, including a win over No. 23-ranked Pacific. However, the Utes rallied to steamroll through the Mountain West Conference Tournament and became the lowest seed to ever win it at No. 4. Utah earned the MWC automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, advancing to its 12th regional tournament.
The team returns 11 players from last season and will feature seven newcomers.
Returning from that team are two of its four all-conference honorees in Devina Quintero and Lynsey Wall. Quintero is the top returning hitter for the Utes. Last season, the freshman utility player was second on the team in batting (.325), RBI (42) and round-trippers (13). Wall was fourth on the team in runs (25) while her eight doubles were third best.
Brianna Gourdin returns to the circle after leading the Utes in pitching in 2003. The junior righthander retired 132 batters to only 46 walks. She was 18-9 for the season and recorded a 2.81 earned-run average.
Meghan Crouse, Sharee Fonoti, Staci Hemingway, Kelly Matthews, Lindsey Nielsen, Diana Phillips and Katie Sabol are all new faces to the Ute program. Among the newcomers are three all-state performers (two first-teamers and a second-team honoree) and two all-conference selectees.
The Utes will play nine games during the three-week span. Below is the full schedule for all three weekends.
