SALT LAKE CITY--University of Utah Head Softball Coach Mona Stevens announced today that she has hired Kyle Magnusson as an assistant coach. Magnusson joins the Utes after spending the past five seasons as head coach of Hunter High School in Utah. The Minot, North Dakota, native has also served as an assistant for Salt Lake Community College the past two years.
During his time at the helm of Hunter, Magnusson helped turn the softball program around including three second-place region finishes the past three years. He led the Wolverines to a fifth-place finish in the 2003 5A State Tournament, its best in the program's history. This past season, Hunter advanced to the second round of the state playoffs before being knocked into the loser's bracket by eventual state champion Alta.
Magnusson assisted at SLCC during the fall of this year, but was there for the entire year the season before. The Bruins advanced to the Juco World Series this year, which was the first time in school history. Besides coaching at SLCC, Magnusson also worked the Bruins' summer camp.
Magnusson's most impressive accolades have come on the playing field. He moved to Utah to join the prestigious Larry Miller Toyota fastpitch team in 1994. The team would finish second in the ISC in 1995. During his time with the LMT team, Magnusson was named to the ISC All-World team three times, while being voted an ASA Major All-American five times.
He took his game to the world level as a member of the past five U.S. National teams. The team finished second in the 2003 Pan Am Games, which were held in the Dominican Republic. It won the Pan Am Qualifier in 2002, which it hadn't done since 1988. The team also finished fourth in the ISF in 2003 and third in 2000.
Magnusson graduated from Olivet Nazarene in 1993 with a degree in business administration. He currently resides in Salt Lake City and spends his summers playing for a softball team out of Minnesota.
