LAS VEGAS - Four Utes were honored tonight as members of the All-Mountain West Conference baseball team, which was announced at a banquet prior to the start of the MWC Championship. Seniors Jared Pena and Eric Chevalier, junior Matt Ciaramella and freshman Jay Brossman were named to the 26-member team.
Pena, one of five repeat selections, currently ranks second on the team in hits (78) and doubles (24), and third in batting average (.355). In conference games, he posted team highs of 51 hits, 39 RBI and a .405 batting average. He was named MWC Player of the Week for March 1-7 and currently ranks 13th nationally with 0.44 doubles per game.
Chevalier, in his second season with the Utes, leads the team in triples (6), stolen bases (11) and walks (26). He had a 32-game MWC hitting streak, which carried over from the 2003 season, and is one triple away from tying the Utah single-season record of seven.
Ciaramella, an all-conference pick for the second year in a row, recently set a Utah single-season doubles record with 27 and is currently tied for the career record with 60. He currently leads the team in at bats (231), runs (49), hits (84), doubles (27), home runs (13), RBI (61), slugging percentage (.658) and on base percentage (.422). Ciaramella was named MWC Player of the Week for April 19-25 and currently ranks third nationally with 0.49 doubles per game.
Brossman is one of just three freshman named to the All-MWC team. He currently leads the team with a .374 batting average after working his way into the starting lineup in March. He has 16 multi-hit and seven multi-RBI games.
Utah faces Brigham Young in the first round of the tournament tomorrow, May 26, at 11 a.m. (PDT).
