Utah Baseball Drops Second Game of Series to New Mexico

SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team gave up three runs in the 11th inning, falling to New Mexico 7-4 in the second game of a three-game series with the Lobos at Ute Field. With the loss, the Utes fall to 7-19 overall and 2-7 in Mountain West Conference play.
Junior Clay Westmoreland suffered the loss on the mound. He threw 3.0 innings, giving up three runs on six hits, while striking out five. Utah's starter, Doug Mackay, pitched 7.0 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits. He struck out seven.
New Mexico got on the board early, plating one on an RBI-single in the top of the first. The Utes answered in the bottom of the when Trevor Eastman, who reached on an error, scored on a base hit by freshman Jake Waldram to tie the game.
In the top of the third, the Lobos scored two runs on a one-run single and a ground out to take a 3-1 lead.
Junior Matt Ciaramella made it a one-run game in the fifth when he knocked a solo homer to left field.
New Mexico came right back in the sixth with a sacrifice fly to take a 4-2 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, sophomore Ryan Khoury hit a two-out, two-run long ball to left field to tie the game at four apiece.
The Utes stranded two in the bottom of the ninth, sending the game into extra innings. Then, in the top of the 11th, New Mexico plated three, one on a solo home run to right field and the other two on RBI-doubles, to win the game.
Waldram finished the day 3-for-5 with one run and one RBI, while Ciaramella was 2-for-6 with one run and one RBI. Khoury was 1-for-6 with one run and two RBI. Senior Eric Chevalier extended his MWC hitting streak to 30 games with a single in the third inning.

The two teams close out the series at noon tomorrow, April 10, at Ute Field.
