COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Utah baseball team rattled off a season-high 20 hits and eight Utes had multi-hit games en route to a 13-6 win over Air Force this afternoon. With the win, the Utes improve to 6-16 overall and 2-5 in Mountain West Conference play.
Utah starter Jason Price got the win on the mound, improving to 2-4 on the year. He threw seven innings, giving up five runs on 12 hits, while striking out 11 and walking two. Reliever Travis Kohn pitched two innings, giving up one run on two hits, while striking out three.
Utah got on the board in the top of the first when catcher Trevor Eastman hit a two-run single up the middle. The Falcons answered with one run in the bottom of the inning to make it a 2-1 game.
After three scoreless innings, the Utes plated four in the top of the fifth. The first two runs came off RBI doubles by sophomore Ryan Khoury and freshman Jay Brossman, and the other two runs were off base hits by Eric Chevalier and Tyson Olson, giving Utah a 6-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Air Force made it a 6-4 ballgame on a two-run homer and an RBI-double.
The Utes came right back in the sixth with a Brossman two-run home run to right field. Utah added to its lead in the top of the seventh, stringing together three base hits to plate one run, and adding two more on a homer to right field by senior Jared Pena to take an 11-4 lead.
The Falcons added a run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI-double, but Utah answered in the eighth on a two-run long ball to right field by Olson to take a 13-5 lead.
Air Force scored again on a base hit bunt in the bottom of the eighth to make it a 13-6 ball game, but that was as close as the Falcons would get.
Olson finished the day 3-for-5 with one run and four RBI, while Brossman was 3-for-5 with two runs and three driven in. Chevalier extended his MWC hitting streak to 27 games as he was 3-for-5 with four runs and one RBI.
