ST. GEORGE, Utah - The Utah baseball team belted off 20 hits, including seven home runs by six different players, in a 14-3 rout of Southern Utah this afternoon. With the win, the Utes improve to 2-8 on the year.
Sophomore southpaw Jason Price (1-2) earned the win on the mound, pitching the entire game and giving up just three runs on four hits. He also struck out a career-high 12 batters.
After a scoreless first, Utah scored four runs in the top of the second on a solo homer by senior Cort Wilson and a three-run long ball by freshman John Welsh.
The Utes plated three more in the fourth on a two-run homer by junior Trevor Eastman. A string of singles brought home the third run, giving Utah a 7-0 lead.
Southern Utah got on the board in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run triple, making it 7-2.
Utah scored another run in top of the sixth when Welsh doubled to left field and was brought home on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Ryan Khoury.
The Thunderbirds answered in the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer, bringing the score to 8-3 in favor of Utah.
Utah increased its lead in the seventh with back-to-back solo long balls by Wilson and junior Tyson Olson. Junior TJ Floyd then hammered a two-run home run to left field.
The Utes added runs in the eighth and ninth when freshman Jake Waldram homered to left field and senior Jared Pena scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Jake Basham.
In all, seven Utes finished with multi-hit games, led by Eastman, who went 4-for-5 with two RBI and three runs. Khoury went 3-for-5 on the day, while Welsh was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Wilson was 2-for-4 with two homers, and both Pena and Floyd were 2-for-5 on the game.

Utah plays a second game against the Thunderbirds at 1 p.m. tomorrow, March 5, at Dixie HS.
