ST. GEORGE, Utah-What looked to be like a repeat of yesterday's match up between the Utes and Lions turned into a barnburner as Utah defeated Loyola Marymount 10-9 in extra innings. The win puts Utah at 3-1 overall, with the only loss being to the Lions yesterday at the Southern Utah Tourney. Utah now heads to Las Vegas for the UNLV Softball Classic Feb. 13-15.
The Lions took an early lead in the second after a Utah error and LMU double scored a run. LMU added two more in the third off a home run to push the lead to 3-0. Utah would answer in the fourth with its first score. A two-run homer by Devina Quintero cut the margin to one. In the latter of the inning, LMU notched two more runs to make it a 5-2 game.
In the fifth, Utah added three more runs off single shots by Lynsey Wall, Glennis Donnelly and Quintero. This left the score even at five apiece. LMU took the lead back quickly with a home run of its own in the bottom of the fifth making it 6-5.
With two on and one out in the top of the seventh, Quintero ripped a single through the right side to give Utah its first lead at 7-6. The Utes would add two more after a long ball by Ivette Hernandez (9-6).
In the bottom of the seventh, LMU answered the call with a three-run homer to tie the game at 9-9 and force extra innings.
With Gourdin on second (international tie-breaker rule) for Utah, Wall knocked a double to right which scored Gourdin and gave Utah a 10-9 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Utah retired the side to earn the victory.
Brianna Gourdin earns the victory after coming on in relief. It was her second win of the weekend. Overall, Utah posted five home runs in the game, which ties the school record.
