ST. GEORGE, Utah-Utah evened up its record to 1-1 after defeating Southern Utah 10-1 at its own tournament on Saturday, Feb. 7. Utah now faces UC Riverside and Loyola Marymount on Sunday to conclude the tourney.
It didn't take the Utes long to put numbers on the scoreboard. Lead off batter Lynsey Wall knocked a dinger in the first to put Utah up 1-0. The Utes added a second run in the third off another blast-this time by Glennis Donnelly. In the fourth, Utah increased its margin by another three runs. Devina Quintero charged home after a fielder's choice by Brianna Gourdin put the ball into play. With two runners on, Wall then ripped a double off the fence in right center to make it 5-0.
The Thunderbirds posted their first run of the game in the fifth inning. With a runner on, Anna Leeman smashed a double down the left field line to bring in Erin Neiderhauser
The Utes added another pair in the bottom of the sixth to push it to 7-1. Donnelly knocked her second home run of the game, this time with Jackie Wong on base. After Donnelly cleared the bases, Melissa Stahnke reached on a single while Ivette Hernandez advanced to first after being hit by a pitch. The next batter, Quintero, ended the game with a bomb over the left field wall to make the mercy rule in effect (10-1).
Gourdin (1-0) tossed a great game for Utah to earn the victory. The sophomore gave up just three hits and a run in 6.0 innings of work. She also struck out a career-high nine batters. The team backed her up defensively, committing no errors in the game. Bobbi Jo Merril is credited with the loss for SUU after allowing nine runs (eight earned) off 10 hits.
