SALT LAKE CITY -- Thanks to the University of Utah baseball team, Salt Lake City-area baseball fans will have an opportunity to meet Terry Francona, manager of the world champion Boston Red Sox next month. Ute head coach Bill Kinneberg has scheduled "An Evening With Terry Francona" for Jan. 18.
The event will be held January 18 at the Sheraton City Centre Hotel, beginning at 6 p.m. The event will begin with a reception, followed by dinner and a one-hour program and live auction of memorabilia items. In addition, everyone in attendance will receive a baseball autographed by Terry Francona.
As part of the program, Francona will discuss Boston's historic season. He will also answer questions from those in attendance. Frank Layden will serve as master of ceremonies for the event.
Francona is making the trip to Salt Lake City, which is a fund-raiser for the University of Utah baseball program, due to his long-standing friendship with Kinneberg.
"Bill (Kinneberg) and I have been best friends since college," Francona said. "I am looking forward to the opportunity to come out to Utah and help his program out in any way I can."
Kinneberg said he is grateful to his friend for taking part. He said it will be a great time for baseball fans to begin thinking about warmer weather and America's pastime.
"It will be kind of a kickoff banquet for baseball," Kinneberg said. "Spring training will be right around the corner, our season will be right around the corner. It will be time to start thinking about baseball again. This will be a great opportunity to get alumni, fans and anyone interested in baseball together for a great event."
Cost for "An Evening With Terry Francona" is $100/plate or $1000/table. Those interested in attending must RSVP to 801-581-6445 by Jan. 12, 2005.
