Utah Blanks UNLV 2-0 To Advance To MWC Championship

PROVO, Utah - Utah got revenge and more importantly moved on to the Mountain West Championship title game with a 2-0 semifinal win over UNLV on Thursday night at BYU's South Stadium.
UNLV, which defeated the Utes 1-0 on Oct. 7 in Salt Lake City on the way to winning the Mountain West Conference regular-season title, fell to the Utes in a hard-fought affair that was scoreless for the first 80 minutes.
In a game controlled largely by UNLV early on, freshman midfielder Kiley Jones got her first goal of the season from 25 yards out 80:11 into the game. The Utes had a free kick on the side that allowed them to serve the ball in to Jones. The freshman from San Clemente, Calif., scooped it up in a scramble and fired away, skimming the ball across the turf and into the back of the net on the right side, past UNLV keeper Jenna Huff.
Amanda Feigt then finished it off with 1:17 remaining. Feigt, a sophomore from Sandy, Utah, got a breakaway opportunity down the left side and put it past Huff from 10 yards out.
Utah (13-5-2) has won six of its last seven games in an effort to make its third consecutive NCAA Championships under Rich Manning. The MWC Tournament winner receives an automatic NCAA berth.
UNLV (12-4-2) was the dominant team in the first 45 minutes, getting off five unanswered shots before Utah's Chelsea Card missed on a header with 2:26 to play in the half.
The Utes picked up the tempo in the second half. Lauren Field came close to breaking the scoreless tie with 31:35 to play. Field had a breakaway opportunity down the right side of the field, forcing Huff to make a great safe and punch her attempt away.
Ute goaltender Ashley Mason made a great stop of her own with 17 minutes left on a shot by Annii Magliulo. Mason, a sophomore from Sunnyvale, Calif., made four saves in the game, including three in the first 90 minutes.
Huff, who was a first team all-MWC co-goalkeeper, had allowed only 12 goals in 17 regular-season games before giving up two to the Utes.
Utah will play for the MWC Tournament championship on Saturday at 11 a.m. against San Diego State, a 2-0 winner over Air Force in Thursday's late semifinal.
