SALT LAKE CITY-The University of Utah softball team concluded its play in the Utah Fall Classic on Sunday, Sept. 14. The Utes defeated Southern Utah (4-1) and Utah State (10-1), but fell short against Brigham Young (6-5). Overall the weekend proved to be a positive experience on the defensive and offensive side of the ball. The Utes committed no errors in the three outings and combined for 19 runs.
Utah continues its fall ball season today, Sept. 16, as it hosts Salt Lake Community College at 2:30 p.m. at Ute Field. Later this week, Utah hosts the second Utah Fall Classic (Sept. 19-21), which will feature Utah, Washington, Nebraska and Utah State.
Utah Fall Classic Recaps
Utah began the Utah Fall Classic with a 4-1 victory over Southern Utah on Friday, Sept. 12. Glennis Donnelly led the Ute hitters, going 3-of-3 at the plate with two singles and a three-run dinger. Pitchers Heather Bowlin and Melissa Oakes combined to allow just one run. The freshman Oakes struck out 6-of-13 batters faced.
Game two proved to be a nail-biter, but in the end Brigham Young grabbed the 6-5 victory on Saturday morning. Trailing 6-4, Utah staged a seventh-inning rally to score one run, but then failed to bring home the runner on third. The Utes threw freshman Samantha Schroeder and sophomore Brianna Gourdin against the Cougars. Both pitchers threw well for the Utes.
The final game on Saturday afternoon saw the Utes defeat Utah State, 10-1. Senior Melissa Stahnke and sophomore Lynsey Wall both knocked home runs in the victory. Once again, Bowlin and Oakes combined for the victory. Oakes didn't allow a hit in the four innings she pitched.
Quoting Head Coach Mona Stevens
"The atmosphere around the ballpark was so much fun this past weekend because of the personnel on this team. I was very pleased with our offensive effort-19 runs is a very good effort. I was also very happy with our pitching. Freshman Melissa Oakes threw well in her first game and our other freshman Samantha Schroeder also pitched well considering we threw her to the wolves by having her face BYU who was pounding the ball."
"This weekend we'll be able to play against the big dogs and see where we are when playing against two NFCA Top 10 teams."
