SALT LAKE CITY - Junior Ute Sean Overholt and current signee Eric Schaler, both right-handed pitchers, have been selected in the 2003 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. Overholt was the 1,033 overall pick, selected in the 35th round by the Chicago Cubs. Schaler was the 1,426 pick, taken in the 48th round by the New York Yankees.
Overholt, a three-year player for the Utes, posted a 7.46 ERA in 66 1/3 innings pitched last season. He struck out 56 batters in his 17 appearances. On his career, he struck out 82 batters in 125 innings pitched over 46 appearances.
Schaler, an incoming freshman from Cherry Creek High School in Englewood, Colo., went 7-0 with a 1.54 ERA as a senior. He struck out 53 batters in 41 innings pitched, while walking just 17. Schaler will play in the Colorado Rockies High School All-Star Game this Sunday, June 8, at Coors Field.
