SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team put an end to a seven-game losing streak, defeating Air Force 7-0 this afternoon at Franklin Covey Field just before the rains came. The Utes improve to 20-27 on the year and 7-17 in Mountain West Conference play.
Sophomore Clay Westmoreland (5-5) pitched the complete-game shutout, his first of the year. He gave up just four hits, walked one batter and struck out four.
Utah struck first in the bottom of the second, when senior Mike Basham singled, driving in freshman Tyler Kmetko.
In the third, senior Wick Udy hit a solo long ball to right field to put Utah up 2-0. It was his third homer of the year.
Then, in the fourth, the Utes plated two more runs, one on a Basham triple and the other on an RBI-single by junior Jared Pena.
After two and a half scoreless innings, Utah strung together three base hits, including an RBI-single by junior Cort Wilson. Kmetko was then intentionally walked, loading the bases. After a pitching change and two Utah strikeouts, Pena singled up the middle, driving in two more runs for a seven-run lead.
Pena went 3-for-4 on the day with three RBI, while junior Mike Westfall was 3-for-5 with one run scored. Udy finished 2-for-5 with two runs and one RBI, and Basham went 2-for-4 with one run and two driven in.
