ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Three Utah baseball players were named to the all Mountain West Conference team tonight at the MWC Championship banquet. Center fielder Matt Ciaramella and second baseman Jared Pena were first-team selections, while reliever Brady Martinez was a second-team honoree.
Ciaramella is batting .354 on the year and .417 in conference games. He currently leads the Utes in runs (51), hits (70), doubles (14) and RBI (14). He was named MWC Player of the Week for April 7-13 after he hit .579 (11-for-19) on the week.
Ciaramella has a team-high 20 multiple-hit games and 11 games with two or more RBI. He was also named first-team Academic All-District with a 3.636 grade-point average.
Pena boasts a .343 batting average with 58 hits, 14 doubles, six home runs and 33 RBI on the year. He also has a team-high 122 assists. In conference games, Pena is batting .383.
The Riverton, Utah, native has 16 games with two or more hits and 10 multiple-RBI games. Pena was named to the all-tournament team at the Bob Schaeffer Memorial Classic at Arizona State, where he was spectacular in the field, making 16 fielding assists. At the plate, he went 3-for-8 with three doubles for a .375 batting average. He also scored two runs.
Martinez leads the Ute pitching staff with a 2.95 ERA in 19 appearances. He has an opponent batting average of .255 and has seven saves on the year. He needs just one more to tie the Utah season and career saves records.
In addition, Martinez boasts a 49 to 8 strikeout to walk ratio.
The Utes face San Diego State at 3 p.m. tomorrow in the first round of the MWC Championship.
