COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The University of Utah baseball team fell to Texas A&M 5-1 this evening in its final game of the Domino's Pizza Aggie Classic in College Station, Texas. The Utes finished the tournament with a 3-3 record.
After 2 1/2 scoreless innings, things fell apart for Utah in the bottom of the third after Ute starter Ryan Florence gave up four singles, all of which resulted in Aggie runs, giving Texas A&M a 4-0 advantage.
The Utes scored in the top of the fourth, when sophomore Matt Ciaramella, senior Jake Jordison and junior Mike Westfall all singled. Ciaramella reached home from second on the Westfall hit through to the right side.
The Aggies struck again in the fifth on a one-run double, bringing the score to 5-1, which it remained throughout.
Florence suffered the loss on the mound, pitching 2 1/3 innings and giving up four hits and four runs. He was replaced by junior Kevin Carver, who threw 1 2/3 innings and allowed two hits. Junior Ben Buck then entered for one inning, giving up two hits and one run. Sophomore Jared Snyder came in to close in the seventh, striking out two.
Junior Wick Udy went 2-for-3 on the day, while Westfall was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Ciaramella was 1-for-3 and scored Utah's run.
UP NEXT:
The Utes travel to St. George, Utah, for a three-game series against Southern Utah this weekend, Feb. 27-March 1. The Thursday-Sunday games all start at noon at Dixie High School.
