Santa Barbara, Calif.--Utah rolled by San Diego, 8-3, on Friday afternoon at the Softball by the Beach Tournament. Up next, Utah plays Cal Poly later tonight.
A Utah error kept what would have been a scoreless first inning alive as San Diego jumped out to a 3-0 lead with an RBI double and two-run single. That was it for the Tereros, as pitcher Jen Pursell settled down and Utah made no more errors to hold San Diego scoreless the rest of the ball game.
Utah used pairs of the runs in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings to build the final of 8-3. In the first, two errors led to two Ute runs to make it 3-2. With the bases loaded in the second, the Teroro hurler hit Melissa Stahnke which brought home Jackie Wong, 3-3. Then the next batter, Niki Hayhurst drew another freebie, a walk, which scored Masie Ota, 4-3.
After getting blanked in the third, Utah posted another double when Ivette Hernandez???sup>TMs double to left field to bring home Hayhurst and Stahnke, 6-3. Stahnke doubled and Hayhurst walked to reach base earlier in the inning. The final two runs came in the fifth. Sarah Lyman led off the inning with a triple to center and went on to score on a sacrifice hit by Masie Ota. Then a home run over the left field fence by Glennis Donnelly set the final score at 8-3.
Pursell moves to 3-3 on the year after earning the win. The senior allowed six hits, three runs (no earned), while striking out one in the complete-game effort. The loss goes to Lohse for San Diego.
