Utah Baseball Again Defeats Cal State Northridge 5-4

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Ute baseball team won 5-4 on Saturday in the second of three games at Cal State Northridge, despite being out-hit 10-6 on the ballgame. With the victory, Utah improves to 2-0 on the series and 3-2 overall.
The Matadors jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings, but Utah came back in the fourth with three runs of its own. Freshman Jake Basham doubled, followed by a sophomore Brett Sundberg RBI double. Sundberg then advanced to third on a passed ball and was brought home on a Matt Ciaramella sacrifice fly.
The next batter, senior Jake Jordison, doubled and advanced to third on a passed ball. Junior Mike Westfall then grounded out to the short stop, but brought in Jordison for the third run of the inning for the Utes.
The game was then scoreless for the next four innings, when, in the top of the ninth, Jordison banged a two-run homer, giving Utah a 5-3 advantage.
After freshman southpaw Jason Price gave up a double in the bottom of the ninth, sophomore Brady Martinez entered the game and was immediately called for a balk, allowing the Matador player to advance to third. The following batter brought in the run on a sacrifice fly, bringing the score to 5-4 in favor of Utah.
The next batter singled, but was thrown out at second base by left fielder Jake Basham. The third and final out came when the next batter flied out to Ciaramella in center field.
Jordison led Utah at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a single, a double and a home run. He scored two runs and drove in two runs.
Sophomore Clay Westmoreland got the start on the mound, throwing five innings, allowing five hits and three runs, and striking out two. Price got the win, going three innings, giving up four hits and one run, while striking out two batters. Martinez got the save, his second of the season, pitching one inning and giving up just one hit and no runs.
