LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Utah fell behind 1-0 in the 14th minute before scoring five unanswered goals to blow past UNLV 5-1 on Thursday night in women's soccer. All five Ute goals were scored by different players.
With BYU's loss at San Diego State on Thursday, Utah (12-2, 3-0 MWC) moves one game ahead of the Cougars in the Mountain West Conference standings.
After falling behind 1-0, the 19th-ranked Utes tied the game in the 37th minute after Amber Brower took a cross in the box from Ester Imotan and shot toward the right post. The Utes took the lead when Missy Dennis scored on a rebound off a save two and a half minutes later.
In the fourth minute out of halftime, Tracy Stratton put Utah up 3-1, scoring on a header off a corner kick. The Utes had 14 corners to none for the Rebels, and had a 24-9 advantage in shots.
Down two goals, UNLV (6-7-2, 0-2 MWC) was forced to open things up to get back in the game, which gave the Utes some excellent scoring opportunities. Amanda Feigt scored on a breakaway goal with less then seven minutes to play. Ester Imotan capped off the scoring with a goal in the 86th minute.
Ashley Mason and Kaycie Zimmerman split time in goal, with Mason give up one goal and making four saves in the first 45 minutes. Zimmerman made three saves in the second half.
Lauren Field, Utah's leading goal scorer heading into the game, had a seizure on the field with 12 minutes to play. The junior forward has been suffering the effects of a heart condition since last spring, but has been cleared to play in 11 games this season. Field wasn't experiencing any further problems after the game, and will be reevaluated before the team heads to San Diego on Friday.
The Utes play San Diego State on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. (PDT).
