SALT LAKE CITY - Amber Brower's goal 2:30 into the first overtime period lifted Utah past New Mexico 1-0 in women's soccer on Saturday afternoon at Ute Field. The win gave Utah a 2-0 start to the Mountain West Conference season and improved its overall record to 11-2.
Brower took the ball off of a rebound as the Utes pressured Lobo keeper Kristen Winters early in the first overtime period. Brower took the shot from eight yards out and placed it into the lower left side of the net for the game winner. It was her sixth goal of the season.
Kaycie Zimmerman played the entire 92:30 in goal for the Utes, making one save for her third complete game shutout.
After New Mexico (1-7-3, 0-2 MWC) pounded the Ute defense early in the second half, Utah was the aggressor in the final 22 minutes of regulation. Winters made eight saves and helped stave off some excellent scoring opportunities for Utah in the final six minutes. Tracy Stratton was unable to put in a header off of a corner kick with 5:40 to play. Missy Dennis had the ball taken away from her in front of the goal and was unable to get a shot off with 4:55 left.
The Utes outshot the Lobos 20-2 and had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Utah continues conference play on the road next weekend. The Utes open a two-game trip against UNLV on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. (PDT).
