Provo, Utah - The University of Utah defeated the UNLV Rebels in the third game of opening day at the 2002 Mountain West Conference Tournament 8-0 in five innings of play. Utah improves to 28-33 while UNLV drops to 30-33. Utah will play the loser of Game 4 Friday at 4:30 p.m. UNLV will play BYU on Friday at 2 p.m.
The Utes started the scoring strong in the bottom of the second inning on a grand slam by Lyndsey Trevis, her fifth home run of the season and the first home run of the 2002 MWC Tournament. After leading 1-0 after an RBI single from senior Molly McLean, Trevis stepped up to the plate and knocked the ball over right-center field, bringing in Masie Ota, McLean, and Christa Pfeninger.
In the bottom of the third, McLean knocked in her second run of the day, bringing in Traci Keller for the second time as the Utes took a 6-0 lead. Utah tacked on one more run in the fourth as Melissa Stahnke led of the inning with a double. Lauren Field pinch ran for Stahnke and was brought home off a fielder's choice by Michelle Larson.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Utah brought in the final score to win the game 8-0 due to the eight-run rule. Ota scored off a throwing error by the catcher with the bases loaded.
Junior Jennifer Pusell (16-16) was dominant on the mound allowing only one hit while striking out seven batters. MWC Player of the Year Geney Orris (9-8) picked up the loss for the Rebels in 4 1/3 innings after being hit hard in the wrist in the bottom of the fifth.
