Albuquerque, N.M. - The University of Utah softball team split with the New Mexico Lobos, losing game one, 8-6 and winning the late game, 11-10 in a MWC match-up at Lobo Field in Albuquerque, N.M. on Fri., May 3. Utah moves to 24-33 overall, 8-4 in MWC play. The Lobos move to 15-27 on the season, 7-10 in the MWC.
In game one, junior Niki Hayhurst was a perfect 4-for-4 with a two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning and a grand slam homer in the top of the fifth inning. In the game, Hayhurst racked up two runs and six RBI. Senior Molly McLean picked up two hits, while Traci Keller and Angie Kenney notched one hit each. Jen Pursell took the loss for Utah after throwing 6.0 innings and giving up 12 hits, eight runs and six walks in 38 batters faced. As a team, Utah totaled 12 hits in 27 at bats, along with eight runs and eight RBI.
For the Lobos, Michelle Carter nailed a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning to seal the deal. Carter was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI. Teammate Cassie Chavez went 2-for-3 with one run and two RBI. Amy Dumas (5-9) recorded the win and Hayley Punter got the save for New Mexico. The Lobos had nine hits in 29 at bats, and six runs and six hits.
Game two saw the Utes jump out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning. New Mexico came back to score six runs in the bottom of the first, but in the top of the fourth inning, Utah scored three more runs to stay on top. The Lobos scored four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Utah sealed the deal on a triple to right field by McLean and a single up the middle by sophomore Masie Ota.
In the game, McLean went 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Sophomore Melissa Stahnke went 3-for-5 with a home run, three runs and five RBI. Angie Kenney added two hits and Michele Larsen went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Heather Bowlin started the game and threw 3.0 innings for the Utes. Teammate Jen Pursell came in and got the win. Pursell (14-16) hurled 4.0 innings and gave up just one hit and one earned run in 19 batters faced. As a team, the Utes racked up 15 hits, 11 runs and 10 RBI in 38 at bats.
For the Lobos, Brooke Chaffee posted three hits in five at bats and one double, two runs and three RBI. Kim Korsak went 1-for-2 with two runs, while Sabrine Sandberg added one double and two RBI. Hayley Punter recorded the loss for the Lobos. She now moves to 8-12 on the season.
Up Next: Utah will face the Rams of Colorado State in a MWC match-up in Fort Collins, Colo. on Sun., May 5 at 11:00 a.m. On Tues., May. 7, the Utes will take on the Utah State at home in their final regular-season home contest at 3:00 p.m. On May 9-11, Utah will vie for the MWC Tournament crown in Provo, Utah.
