PROVO, Utah-The Utes saw their season end with a 13-7 loss to UNLV in game eight of the Mountain West Conference Tournament at Larry Miller Field. UNLV moves on to play BYU in an elimination game at 7:00 p.m. tonight with the winner advancing on to play San Diego State on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
A home run over the left field wall by lead-off batter Ryan Ruiz put UNLV up, 1-0. After retiring the next batter, Ute hurler Cheyenne Rushton gave up another Rebel home run to David Trujillo, 2-0. UNLV would add one more in the third to make it a 3-0 hole for the Utes.
Utah notched its first run in the latter of the third when Mike Basham, who had reached on earlier on a bunt single, scored on a sac fly by Brett Baldwin, 3-1. But the Rebels answered in the top of fourth with five runs, including one off a Ute error and two off another home run by Trujillo, 8-1. The insurance runs brought in freshman Doug Mackay to replace the starter Rushton.
The Utes put two more on the board in the fourth as Brit Pannier connected for a long ball over the right field wall to score himself and Castleton, who had reach earlier on an infield single, 8-3. An RBI double and single scored two more for the Rebels in the fifth, 10-3.
In the sixth, the Utes used four runs off four hits to cut it to a 10-7 lead. A solo shot by Weese kicked off the Ute offense. The next batter, Westfall, doubled to center and then scored on a double by Pannier. Pannier would then cross the plate easily on a dinger over the left center wall by Basham, 10-7.
Matt Ciaramella led off the seventh with a single and then Donnie Saba walked on four straight pitches. That was it for the Rebel reliever Jake Gann, as UNLV brought in Jeremy Weinberg in relief. Weinberg struck out Castleton and then Weese ripped a line drive that the UNLV first baseman snagged and threw to second to double off Ciaramella.
The Rebels pushed it to a six-run lead in the eighth, which was too much for Utah to overcome as their season concluded with a third-round defeat. The Utes finished the year with a 33-26 overall record, which is the second-highest win total in Ute history, along with a 16-14 conference record.
Rushton is credited with the loss to finish at 8-6 on the year. The righthander yielded eight runs off eight hits in 3.2 innings of work. Giavanni Pupo earns the win to improve to 3-4. Offensivley, Pannier led Utah with three RBI off the homer and double with two runs scored. Ciaramella, Baldwin and Basham each added two hits, while every Ute starter accounted for at least one hit in the loss.
