PROVO, Utah-The Utes dropped game one of the Mountain West Conference Tournament to UNLV on Wednesday afternoon at Larry Miller Field. Utah had a 9-1 lead, but UNLV staged the largest comeback in MWC history with eight runs. The loss puts Utah into game four of the tournament, as they will face the loser of the BYU vs. Air Force game later tonight.
The Utes jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The first run came after Donnie Saba, who had singled and advanced to third on a single by teammate Adam Castleton, scored on a balk by Rebel pitcher Robbie Van. Castleton then went on to score on a single to left by Mike Westfall, 2-0. Utah doubled its score in the bottom of the second. Brandon Biesinger was the first Ute run and following him home was Mike Basham. Biesinger had reached on a single to short, while Basham reached on an error by the UNLV third baseman during his sacrifice bunt attempt. Both advanced on a sac bunt by teammate Donald Hawes and then scored on a single to left by Matt Ciaramella, 4-0.
It was four more the Utes posted in the bottom of the fourth. Castleton's single to left knocked in Hawes and Ciaramella. Castleton advanced to second on an error by the left fielder while fielding his single and then scored on a single by Weese, 7-0. Weese swiped second base and then crossed the plate off a single by Westfall, 8-0. Van was replaced after just 3.2 innings of work. The Rebels put up their first run of the game, which was unearned, in the top of the fifth, 8-1. The Utes matched the run with one in the latter of the inning to make it a 9-1 score. Again it was the matching game as Air Force knocked in another one in the top of the sixth, 9-2.
The Rebels scored six runs in the seventh off six hits, including two home runs. Brent Johnson led off the inning with his 29th double of the year, which breaks the UNLV school record. Johnson then scored easily off a rocket over the centerfield wall by David Trujillo. The home run was just the sixth one Utah starter Mitch Maio has allowed this season in 90 plus innings of work. The Rebels continued to hit the ball well and chased Maio out of the game with one out and runners on the corners in the bottom of the seventh. The Rebel baserunner on third would score as the next batter, Tony Schuler, ripped a double down the left field line off reliever Ryan Reisbeck, 9-5. UNLV continued its scoring barrage in the seventh when the runner on third scored on a wild pitch, 9-6, and Schuler advanced to third on the wild pitch. The next batter, Jason Reuss, knocked a sharp shot to third baseman Westfall who got Schuler out in a run down. UNLV made it a one-run game when Robbie Van Kirk hit a two-run home run over the right field wall, 9-8.
Reisbeck walked the first batter in the eighth and was then replaced by Jared Snyder. It was then Trujillo doing more damage by ripping a double to center to score the runner and tie the game at nine apiece. Trujillo then scored on a sharp shot down the first baseline that took a nasty bounce over Weese's head. The run gave the Rebels their first lead of the game, 10-9. With runners on second and third, UNLV added to the lead after Reuss knocked a double to right center, 12-9. With a new pitcher, Clay Westmoreland, pitching in the ninth, Trujillo knocked his second home run of the day over the center field wall, 13-9.
Jeremy Weinberg picks up the win after throwing 1.1 scoreless innings, while Joe Maruffi gets the save. Jared Snyder gets the loss for Utah after allowing three runs off four hits.
Biesinger, Ciaramella and Westfall connected for three hits each in the loss. Ciaramella, Castleton and Westfall knocked in two runs apiece.
