SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's basketball team improved to 6-1 on the season with a 20-point win over New Mexico State at the Huntsman Center tonight. The 74-54 victory was the Utes' sixth-straight. With the exception of the first few minutes, Utah dominated the game, forcing 24 Aggie turnovers and out-rebounding New Mexico State 34-28. The Utes shot 49 percent on the game, while the Aggies were 22-of-50 from the field (44 percent).
Utah started slow, scoring its first basket more than three minutes into the game. The Aggies then built a four-point lead, but the Utes tied it at nine before going on an 11-4 run. Utah then pulled away down the stretch, scoring 12-straight points to close out the half. New Mexico State committed 16 turnovers in the first half alone and Utah out-shot the Aggies 48 percent to 38 percent.
In the second half, Utah built its lead to as many as 23 points, and never led by less than 13. When the Aggies seemed to be closing the gap, Utah scored six straight to seal the win.
"I feel like we're doing some things well and we're having some success," Head Coach Elaine Elliott said. "With each game, we're learning and progressing. We don't have a lot in terms of numbers with just 10 players, but the support we get off the bench is the difference between this year and last year."
Freshman Kim Smith led a trio of Utes in double figures scoring with 19 points. Sophomore Shona Thorburn added 16, while junior Mandie Little finished with 13. Thorburn also had a team-high five rebounds to go along with four assists. Junior Kelsy Stireman dished out a season-high eight assists and junior Carley Marshall had a game-high two blocks.
