Utah Women's Basketball Team Wins Seventh Straight

PULLMAN, Wash. - The University of Utah women's basketball team (7-1) won its seventh straight game this afternoon with an 85-50 rout of Washington State (0-8) in Pullman, Wash. The Utes shot 48 percent on the game and held the Cougars to 37 percent. Utah also out-rebounded Washington State 44-28 and forced 21 Cougar turnovers.
Utah opened the game slow, turning the ball over on three straight possessions. The first basket didn't come until 2:52 into the game and both teams made just one of their first six shots. The Utes then took a commanding lead, ending the half with a 6-0 run. Though Washington State out-shot Utah 40-36 percent, the Utes grabbed 16 more boards (26-10) than the Cougars. Junior Mandie Little had nine rebounds on the half, just three less than the entire Washington State team.
The Utes owned the second half, outscoring the Cougars 47-29, leading by as many as 41 points and going on an 11-0 run at one point. Utah shot a blistering 63 percent on the half.
Sophomore Shona Thorburn led a group of four Utes in double figures scoring with a game-high 19 points. Freshman Julie Wood scored a career-high 17 points and junior Carley Marshall and freshman Kim Smith finished with 12 apiece. Marshall and Thorburn each added nine rebounds, while Little pulled down a game-high 10 boards. Thorburn also had a game-high five assists and four steals.
"We were better in the second half as far as our focus was concerned," Head Coach Elaine Elliott said. "We weren't intense at the start, but we picked it up as the game went on."

After a break for Christmas, the Utes travel to Missoula, Mont. Next Saturday and Sunday for the Montana Tournament. Utah faces No. 14 Mississippi State at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28, in the first round.
