SALT LAKE CITY-The University of Utah Baseball team has named former player Matt Eeles as the new assistant coach. He replaces Todd Delnoce. Eeles played outfield for the U. in 1996 and '97 and was team captain his senior year. Before transferring to the U., he played for Cerritos Junior College. At Cerritos, Eeles was voted to the all-conference first team and named the Dallas Moon Award winner during his sophomore season.
"I'm excited to return to the U. and coach with Tim after playing under him for two seasons," says Eeles. The California native spent the past four years coaching at Mayfair High School in Lakewood, Calif. He was also a coach for the Cerritos Junior College summer program in 1998 and '99 and helped with the Cal State Fullerton camps in 1998, '99 and 2001.
"Matt was always a coach on the field when he played so we've been trying to get him back here," says head coach Tim Esmay. It's exciting to have someone who has coaching experience and believes in the Utah Baseball tradition."
Eeles will be responsible for working with the hitters and outfielders. He will also be in charge of defensive and base running strategies.
