The University of Utah men's and women's swimming and diving teams both finished second at the Colorado St. Early Bird Invitational. The invite was held on Oct. 19-20, and was the first official event of the season for both teams. The women's team finished with a total of 867 points, finishing just behind Colorado St. who totaled 1,055 points. The men's team totaled 882 points, while Air Force took top honors with 1,093 points.
Neringa Statkeviciute had an impressive meet taking top honors in three events. She finished first in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events. Sophomore Kristen Kaiser finished first in both the 1650 free and 400 IM events, while Loren Sweny took top honors in the 500 free. The 800 free relay team set a new Early Bird Invitational record with a time of 7:41.25, the members of the relay team were Sara Afong, Kaiser, Statkeviciute and Sweny. The women's 400 free relay team finished first with a time of 3:34.44 and included Courtney McKinney, Kaiser, Statkeviciute and Sweny.
Cody Rempfer led the Utah men with three first place finishes. He finished first in the 100 and 200 fly with 51.95 and 1:52.87 times respectively. Rempfer also won the 400 IM with a time of 4:11.62. Evan Castro took top honors in the 200 breast with a time of 2:09.29.
"We have made significant improvements in both quality and depth from last year," says head coach Mike Litzinger. "I am pleased with how our teams competed, and this is a great way to start our season."
