SAN LUIS OBISPO, CALIF. -
The University of Utah baseball team forced Cal Poly to extra innings, but an RBI single by Chris Martinez in the tenth did in the Utes, who lost 9-8. The loss dropped the Utes to 0-3 on the young season, with all three losses coming against the Mustangs.
The Utes jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the first inning on a two-run double by Nate Weese. For Weese it was his first of two hits on the day. Cal Poly struck with five in the second inning, then added three more in the fifth, to take an 8-4 lead.
The Utes tied the game in the seventh with a two-run double by Adam Castleton and a two-run single by Tommy Maestas. The double by Castleton was his fourth double of the series.
In the 10th, Cal Poly got a lead-off walk by Scott Anderson. He was then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Chris Hageman and scored on the Martinez single. Brett Lindsey was the losing pitcher for the Utes after going 2.2 innings. He finished with one run and one hit allowed, but walked two.
Utah now travels to the University of Pacific next weekend, Feb. 2-4 to play the Tigers.
