Salt Lake City - Ten players from five Mountain West Conference softball teams earned All-West Region honors as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) on Friday, May 19. Unlike the all-conference team, all-region honors are chosen by position. The West Region consists of teams which belong to the Big West, Western Athletic and Mountain West Conferences.
The Mountain West Conference received both first and second team selections at shortstop and took one-half of the outfield slots (one first team and two second). The league's player of the year, Utah's Kristin Arbogast, earned second-team pitcher recognition behind first team selection Amanda Scott, a senior from Fresno State. In addition, MWC players claimed first-team honors at third base and catcher and took second-team acclaim at the designated player and utility slots.
Utah, which advanced to the NCAA Region I Final after winning both the MWC regular-season and championship titles, earned two first and two second team selections. The Utes' Lyndsey Trevis claimed first team honors at third base as did Sunny Smith at catcher. Arbogast took second team pitching honors along with MWC Freshman of the Year Niki Hayhurst as the designated player.
League runner-up New Mexico landed one player on the second team, in outfielder Krissy Keene. Two of the Lobos top players split time between pitcher and first base, thus are hampered in selections made by position. Third-place San Diego State placed outfielder Kellie Nordhagen on the first team. UNLV shortstop Racheal Goodpaster claimed first team honors and outfielder Nicole Miller second team recognition for the Rebels. Colorado State landed two second team selections for shortstop Holly Schmillen and utility player Alyson Carter.
