SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team boosts their Mountain West Conference record to 2-2 with a 5-2 victory over UNLV. The win brings Utah's season record to 9-14.
The Utes scored five runs on eight hits, while the Rebels scored two runs on seven hits with one error.
UNLV took an early lead scoring one run in the first inning on a solo home run by Tony DeMarco. Utah came back to dominate the game scoring runs in the bottom of the second and third and bringing in three runners on a home run by shortstop Rob Stuart. UNLV came back to score one run in the top of the ninth on another solo homer by DeMarco, but were unable to pull out a victory.
Highlighting for Utah, centerfielder Sam Swenson hit 2-for-4, belting a double and his sixth home run of the season. Swenson leads the team in home runs and doubles (10). He also has a season batting average of .322.
Jared Cavaness picks up his second win for Utah. The senior pitched 8.1 innings for the Utes. He faced 32 batters, allowing only seven hits and two runs while striking out five batters. The game boosts his season ERA to 4.74.
The Utes and the Rebels return to action tomorrow when they continue the three-game series with a single game at 1:00 p.m.
