SAN LOUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Utah baseball team rounded out the Central Coast Classic with a 3-0 record after defeating Cal Poly SLO in two 8-5 victories today. The weekend brings the Utes to a 3-3 season record.
In the first game, Utah scored eight runs on 11 hits with one error while leaving Cal Poly SLO to five runs on five hits with two errors.
First baseman Nate Weese rallied for the Utes going 4-5 with two runs and two RBI. Weese slammed his first home run of the season and had one stolen base. Right fielder Jed Chrisman was 3 of 4 scoring one run and two RBI. He also pounded his first home run of the year. Second baseman Adam Castleton was 2 of 3 with one run and one RBI. The sophomore had two doubles in the game.
On the mound, Jared Cavaness claimed his first win of the season pitching six innings. He faced 28 batters, allowed only four hits and struck out two. Mitch Maio came in for three innings of relief. The sophomore struck out five batters and gave up only one hit.
In the second game, the Utes scored eight runs on 11 hits with no errors. Cal Poly SLO scored five runs on seven hits with two errors.
Senior Jamie Hardy was 4-4, scoring one run and three RBI. Hardy highlighted as Utah's designated hitter cracking two doubles and a home run. Center fielder Sam Swenson had two hits, a pair of runs and three RBI. The junior smashed his second home run of the season.
Junior transfer Jon Lewis won his first game of the season pitching six innings of relief. He faced 24 batters, struck out nine and allowed only four hits.
The Utes return to series action Feb. 11-13 when the play the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif.
