SAN LOUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Utah men's baseball team came from behind to claim its first win of the season in a 4-3 contest over UC Santa Barbara. In their first game of the Central Coast Classic, the Utes scored four runs on 12 hits with no errors and held the Gauchos to three runs and seven hits.
The Gauchos took control of the game in the first inning scoring three runs. The Utes scored one run in both the first and second but were held to two scoreless innings before they scored another solo run in the fifth. The Utes and the Gauchos battled through three and a half innings of scoreless play before Utah decided the game in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Leftfielder Donnie Saba led the Utes at the plate going 3-3 with two base-on-balls . The freshman slammed two doubles and scored two runs. Sam Swenson was 2-3 in the game with two RBI and a sacrifice fly. Shortstop Jake Shortino was 3-4 for the Utes scoring one run and one RBI.
David Ebright won his first complete game. In nine innings, the junior faced 37 batters, allowed only seven hits and struck out five batters.
The Utes continue play in the Central Coast Classic tomorrow when they face Cal Poly SLO and Centenary College.
