Utah Home Opener
The Utah baseball team opens its home season in Salt Lake City with a
three-game series against Rice this Friday through Sunday at Franklin
Covey Field. Games are scheduled on Friday at 2:00 p.m. and Saturday and
Sunday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Utah is 12-11 and 0-3 (ninth) in WAC play. Rice is 20-3 ranking first in the WAC with a 3-0 mark. Last year, the Utes were 0-3 against the Rice Owls.
Utes To Watch
Eric Wallace leads the Utes with nine home runs. He is fourth on the
team with a .302 batting average. The left fielder has 19 hits, four
doubles and 16 RBI.
First baseman Ryan Johnerson leads the Utes with 34 hits. The senior has a .354 batting average with seven doubles, two triples, seven home runs and 23 RBI. He also leads the team with 10 stolen bases (of 10 attempted). In the field, Johnerson has 209 putouts, 16 assists and one error for a .996 fielding average. Freshman Adam Castleton is third on the team with a .325 batting average. The second baseman has 26 hits, including seven doubles, four home runs and 17 RBI. He is 3-for-4 in stolen bases.
Catcher Jared Larsen is hitting .259 with 22 hits, including two doubles, five home runs and 16 RBI.
Brandon Page leads the Ute pitching staff with a 3-0 record and a 3.35 ERA. In eight appearances the junior has played 43 innings, yielding 47 hits and striking out 35 batters.
Lance Ericksen (3-2) has a 6.07 ERA and has completed two of his starts. The senior has made seven appearances and thrown 46.0 innings. He also has 35 strikeouts.
Recent Results
The Utes took two of three from Southern Utah, March 12-13. Utah won
the first game 11-7, dropped the second 18-4 and won the third 7-4.
In the first game, Utah fell behind quickly, giving up three first-inning runs on a two-run home run and a double. It wasn't until the fifth inning that Utah was able to amount some offensive fire power. After scoring three runs in the fifth, the Utes scored two runs each in the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings to put the T-Birds away. Leading the punch for Utah was left fielder Eric Wallace who went yard twice and drove in four runs. Catcher Jared Larsen also hit two solo homers.
In the second game, SUU scored six runs in the first inning. The T-Birds added four runs in the third inning and eight more runs in the fifth. Utah was held to five base hits.
The Utes rebounded quickly in the third game, scoring two runs in the top of the first and three more in the third. Lance Ericksen went the distance on the mound, holding SUU to four base hits while striking out 10 and allowing just one walk.
